Every painting I make starts the same way. The whole surface goes dark before anything else happens.
Then white light is added, allowing the subject to surface. Whatever the light doesn’t reach stays dark. And honestly? I’ve stopped treating that as a problem. The dark is doing half the work. I call it Active Void. I arrived at it by instinct, not theory. I paint fast, I don’t overwork things, and I’ve learned the painting is finished earlier than you think.

Before deciding it was time to become a full time artist and embrace my love of painting over more digital work, I spent thirty years as a graphic and web designer. That career taught me one thing worth keeping: what you leave out matters more than what you put in. Active Void is just that idea, but with paint on it.
I call it Active Void, not just negative space, because I don’t think of the dark as empty. It’s part of the story. I want every piece to feel like something has stepped out of the dark and into your world, and I want you to be the one who decides what that means. That’s the “active” part, you hold the void.

The first collection focusing on Active Void is called, Nightlife, started at my daughter’s place in Brisbane. Baby ringtail possums, held in a towel, wide-eyed in the torchlight. A moment that captured my attention, a start of something that you just can’t let go of until you have translated it to paper. That’s the whole collection really. Australia’s night animals, the way you actually meet them. Briefly. Lit for a second. Gone.

But I’m not stopping there. I’m taking that same stark, high-contrast energy into the deep ocean, into myth, and into the emotional geometry of marionettes and who knows where I’ll end up. Each collection, or sometimes a standalone painting, starts from a moment that inspires, a thought that seeds a memory, or sometimes something as simple as a laugh that gets captured.
Because at the end of the day, I want my art to feel like it belongs in your space. Haunting enough to catch your eye. Honest enough to feel real. And just cheeky enough to make you smile.
