For a standard bedroom wall, an A3 print (roughly 30x42cm) is the sweet spot, big enough to make a statement, but small enough to sit comfortably above a bed, a side table, or a dresser. If you want more impact or have a large, empty wall, an A2 print (42x60cm) works beautifully. And if you are building a gallery wall, an A4 print (21x30cm) pairs perfectly with other pieces.
The anxiety of picking the right size
Let’s be honest. One of the hardest parts of buying art online is trying to visualise the size. You see a beautiful painting on a screen, you click “Add to Cart,” and then a little voice in your head says: “Wait. Is that going to be tiny on my wall? Or is it going to look like a billboard?”
I get it. I have been there myself. That is why I love that my originals and prints come in three standard sizes. It makes the decision a lot easier.
The A3 (30x42cm) – The Goldilocks size
A3 is my personal favourite. It is the size I paint my original pieces on, and it translates beautifully into prints.
It is big enough that it doesn’t get lost on a wall. It commands a little bit of attention. But it is small enough that it doesn’t overwhelm a standard bedroom.
Think about it. The space above a bed is usually about 60 to 80 centimetres wide. An A3 print sits perfectly in that space. It gives you room to breathe on either side, so it doesn’t feel crowded.
The A2 (42x60cm) – The “make a statement” size
If you have a large, blank bedroom wall, or a bed with a wide headboard, the A2 is the one you want.
An A2 print is nearly twice the size of an A3. It commands the room. It says, “I am here, and I am the focal point.”
If you hang an A2 print, let it be the only piece on that wall. It doesn’t need a gallery wall around it. It just needs space to do its thing.
The A4 (21x30cm) – The quiet player
A4 is the smallest size I offer. It is perfect for a smaller bedroom, a side table, or a built-in shelf.
But the best use for an A4 is gallery walls. If you are collecting a few pieces and want to build a cluster of art on a wall, A4 prints are the building blocks. They work beautifully alongside each other without feeling cluttered.
A quick rule of thumb for measuring
If you are unsure which size to pick, here is a simple trick.
Take a piece of paper, tape it to your wall, and step back. Measure out an A3, an A2, and an A4. Leave them up for an hour. Walk in and out of the room. See which one feels right.
It sounds simple, but it works. The right size is the one that makes you stop and look.
A small tip for bedroom styling
If you are hanging a print above a bed, try to leave about 15 to 20 centimetres between the top of the headboard and the bottom of the frame. If you hang it too high, it will feel like it is floating away from the bed. If you hang it too low, it will feel cramped.
Also, think about the light. If you have a window near your bed, hang the print where the natural light can catch the white highlights in the painting. The contrast between the dark void and the daylight will make the artwork feel alive.
